    Testing the Controversy.Joshua M. Tybur, Geoffrey F. Miller & Steven W. Gangestad - 2007 - Human Nature 18 (4):313-328.
Critics of evolutionary psychology and sociobiology have advanced an adaptationists-as-right-wing-conspirators (ARC) hypothesis, suggesting that adaptationists use their research to support a right-wing political agenda. We report the first quantitative test of the ARC hypothesis based on an online survey of political and scientific attitudes among 168 US psychology Ph.D. students, 31 of whom self-identified as adaptationists and 137 others who identified with another non-adaptationist meta-theory. Results indicate that adaptationists are much less politically conservative than typical US citizens and no more (...)

Breaking new ground in the debate about the relation of mind and body, David Armstrong's classic text - first published in 1968 - remains the most compelling and comprehensive statement of the view that the mind is material or physical. In the preface to this new edition, the author reflects on the book's impact and considers it in the light of subsequent developments. He also provides a bibliography of all the key writings to have appeared in the materialist debate.

  17. Universals: an opinionated introduction.D. M. Armstrong - 1989 - Boulder: Westview Press.
In this short text, a distinguished philosopher turns his attention to one of the oldest and most fundamental philosophical problems of all: How it is that we are able to sort and classify different things as being of the same natural class? Professor Armstrong carefully sets out six major theories—ancient, modern, and contemporary—and assesses the strengths and weaknesses of each. Recognizing that there are no final victories or defeats in metaphysics, Armstrong nonetheless defends a traditional account of universals as the (...)

    Learning colour words is slow: A cross-situational learning account.Paul Vogt & Andrew D. M. Smith - 2005 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 28 (4):509-510.
Research into child language reveals that it takes a long time for children to learn the correct mapping of colour words. Steels & Belpaeme's (S&B's) guessing game, however, models fast learning of words. We discuss computational studies based on cross-situational learning, which yield results that are more consistent with the empirical child language data than those obtained by S&B.

I argue that recent advances in developmental biology demonstrate the inadequacy of suborganismal mechanism. The category of the organism, construed as a ’natural purpose’ should play an ineliminable role in explaining ontogenetic development and adaptive evolution. According to Kant the natural purposiveness of organisms cannot be demonstrated to be an objective principle in nature, nor can purposiveness figure in genuine explain. I attempt to argue, by appeal to recent work on self-organization, that the purposiveness of organisms is a natural phenomenon (...)

Is attention necessary for object identification? Evidence from eye movements during the inspection of real-world scenes.Geoffrey Underwood, Emma Templeman, Laura Lamming & Tom Foulsham - 2008 - Consciousness and Cognition 17 (1):159-170.
Eye movements were recorded during the display of two images of a real-world scene that were inspected to determine whether they were the same or not . In the displays where the pictures were different, one object had been changed, and this object was sometimes taken from another scene and was incongruent with the gist. The experiment established that incongruous objects attract eye fixations earlier than the congruous counterparts, but that this effect is not apparent until the picture has been (...)

In this article, we present paradoxical findings from a formative evaluation research project that explores how preadolescent girls understand and feel about their bodies after participating in “Girls on the Run of Los Angeles County”, a girl-serving positive youth development program. Findings from pre/post test data show that girls’ body image improved after participation in GOTR LA, yet many girls also reported the dominant thin ideal and the importance of not being fat as key characteristics of strong and healthy bodies. Exposition and Critique of the Conceptions of Eddington Concerning the Philosophy of Physical Science. [REVIEW]P. D. M. A. - 1961 - Review of Metaphysics 15 (2):347-347.
The substance and development of Eddington's "scientific epistemology" are presented in close parallelism with the philosophy of Kant. The author argues that Kant was far more successful in displaying the philosophical structure of Newtonian physics than Eddington is in showing the philosophy behind quantum mechanics and relativity.--A. The Philosophy of Mathematics: An Introductory Essay. [REVIEW]P. D. M. A. - 1961 - Review of Metaphysics 14 (4):724-724.
An up-to-date exposition and critique of classical and modern philosophies of mathematics leads to the author's thesis: applied mathematics with its perceptual, inexact concepts is logically disconnected from pure mathematics which is idealized and exact. The author introduces the notion of non-unique synthetic a priori propositions and explores the differences and similarities between the logic of exact and that of inexact concepts. A lucid and stimulating essay which combines accuracy and sophistication with a minimum of technical language.--A. P. D. M.

    Wittgenstein's Tractatus: A Critical Exposition of its Main Lines of Thought. [REVIEW]P. D. M. A. - 1961 - Review of Metaphysics 14 (4):727-727.
As a clear, well documented and relatively complete introduction to Wittgenstein's famous book this commentary fulfills a long felt need. Rules for structuring Wittgenstein's statements are helpfully discussed, the terminology of the English translation is significantly improved upon, and the ontological purport of the Tractatus, as well as its striking parallels to Kantian philosophy, are convincingly stressed. But in recasting Wittgenstein's thought in a series of interpretative theses some basic themes become distorted: the notion of "category" is foreign to Wittgenstein's (...)
